Description
Kelso High School burnt down on Friday night. Arson is suspected. My brother Andrew and his wife were visiting for the weekend with their new daughter. They rang ahead to tell us the highschool was on fire because they'd seen it coming into town. We're only a ten minute walk away and could see from the second floor balconies the illuminated smoke billowing from the site. It burnt for hours. Many fire units came from all around, but all they could do was stop it from spreading to nearby houses.
All us Tester boys went to KHS. I started in 1989, Andrew in 1991, Glenn in 1996, and Scott in 2001.
I'm rather sad about losing the place where I spent such a significant part of my life. Back in 2003 we went up for the 25th anniversary celebrations and I got to look around again. But now I'm thinking that my memories (and every other students' memories) are all that's left, except for a smoking shell. I'll be uploading some photos from that visit soon, to join Rings of fire.
Apart from nostalgia, there's also the practicalities. Scott (aka ~Frexe) is in Year 11. Where does he and all the other KHS students go? What's more, almost all of the Year 12 final projects were lost. Apparently the textiles works had been sent off (to Sydney?) the day before. Strangely, the home economics section was spared.
This collection of photos were all taken by my father with his camera. First on friday night watching it burn, then early saturday morning with all the fire fighters, police, and SES on the scene.
Update: Not only was 'home ec' spared, but also the theatrette and one or two offices near that area. Don't know why they didn't go up.
First day back and there was a "meeting" of everyone at the entertainment centre in town. Year 11 and 12 students (including Scott) will be going to Charles Sturt University (CSU), where I studied and Glenn is currently studying part-time. Years 9 and 10 (I think...) will be going to the TAFE campus right near CSU, so I might see some of them today. Don't know what will happen with the other years.
